Believe it or not, this week’s sighting of light came from the mouths of my sons. I work full-time, I’m a full-time mother, I am in school part-time, I write, and I try to stay active in the community in several ways, too. This summer, my husband has been away training for work, so it’s just been the boys and myself. I knew he was coming home on Friday and I had planned to cook shrimp creole as his welcome home dinner. After leaving the barbershop the boys wanted to go to Sam’s Club to checkout the Friday afternoon samples. From there I had a few more errands to run, and as we turned onto our street I could see that my husband was already home. I remarked, “Oh my goodness! How did he get here so early?” (It was about 4:00pm) “I was going to cook a nice dinner and have it ready when he came home! Ugh!” My twelve year-old said, “Mom, you always do that. You think somebody is going to be disappointed because you didn’t do something they didn’t even know you were going to do.” His older brother chimed in, “Yeah, Mom, chill, you do that all the time.” So....maybe they are right! I get frustrated about not meeting my own expectations. Maybe I need to rethink my expectations of myself. Maybe someone else reading this post needs to do the same. I think, as women, we get caught up in the traditional roles of the husband and wife, but fail to realize that those roles must be adjusted due to our current, specific circumstances. I’ve written before, in a post called, Have You Read Your Proverb Today, that everyone has a proverb. Mine is Proverbs 16. It shares great wisdom about keeping our plans in perspective. Verse 9 states, In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps. We make plans all the time, but it is the Lord’s will that those plans become manifest. As a child, my grandmother would always qualify her plans, with “...if the Lord spares my life and it’s the Lord will.” Reading James 4:13-16, she was right not to boast about her intentions. “Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.’ Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, ‘If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.’ As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil.” Even the plans we don’t speak, the plans we ponder, need to be qualified through the Lord’s will. And it was a twelve year-old who noticed my folly. AMEN! Have a blessed weekend! Kim In keeping with this idea...If it's the Lord's will, I would like to host a celebration for the publication of my 10th book, sometime soon. Readers of this blog will be the first to know and you will all be invited! No actual plans are ready, yet, but if it's the Lords will, it will come together. Thank you for reading!
